NOT QUITE WHAT I EXPECTED

The BET Awards aired last night at 8pm eastern/5pm central. According to reports, the network overhauled the whole show to pay tribute to Michael Jackson. There were a couple of renditions of his songs from Jaime Foxx, Ne-Yo and New Edition, as well as a surprise appearance from Michael’s sister, Janet Jackson.
Personally, I hope BET plans to produce a separate tribute because that one wasn’t as profound as I was expecting, which is kind of sad. This moment was a real opportunity for BET to show the essence of how special Jackson was to the music world but I’m afraid that didn’t come across.
If you watched the show, do you think BET honored Michael Jackson well?
SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES

Like everyone else, I was completely shocked when I learned pop icon Michael Jackson had died of cardiac arrest. It didn’t make sense and-to be quite honest-it still doesn’t. You know how they say you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone? Well, that’s how I feel about his passing. It’s like we spent the last 15 years concerned about his changing looks and seemingly peculiar behavior and not enough time showing appreciation for the impact he had on the world around us. It’s a major lesson.
Unfortunately, it’s a lesson some haven’t learned yet. Jackson’s body wasn’t even cold before some people began throwing dirt on his name. Although this happens every time a celebrity dies, it’s more pronounced with Jackson. They don’t realize that many people around the world have an emotional attachment to or affinity for Michael that won’t be swayed by rehashed speculation.
What type of affect did Michael Jackson have on you? Are you touched by his death or could you not care less?
THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO HMMMM...

Bishop Thomas Weeks III has married Prophetess Christina Glenn. For those of you who don’t remember or don’t know Bishop Weeks, he was the second husband of televangelist Juanita Bynum. Some may remember her from her popular No More Sheets video and book. They divorced June 2008, after Weeks was accused of beating Bynum in a parking lot. He pled guilty to aggravated assault and was ordered to attend anger management classes. I’m all for moving on and making life better. I sincerely hope that he has learned from the incident with Bynum and never does anything like that again.
I can’t help but wonder-as a woman, how do you get past public knowledge that your mate has been convicted of abusing his ex-wife? How do you make sure that doesn’t happen in your relationship with him?
WHO’S OBSSESSED

In case you haven’t heard, singer Mariah Carey has a new single called Obsessed. Because of the content, some are speculating that the song is about rapper Eminem, who mentions her name periodically-even though it’s been years since their alleged relationship/encounter or whatever they want to call it. Below are a few lines from her song:
Ooh boy why you so obsessed with me?
Boy I want to know- lyin’ that you’re sexin me
when everybody knows it’s clear that you’re upset with me
Ohh finally found a girl that you couldn’t impress
Last man on the earth- still couldn’t get this
You’re delusional, you’re delusional
Boy you’re losing your mind
It’s confusin yo, you’re confused you know
Why you wasting your time?
Got you all fired up with your Napoleon complex
See right through you like you’re bathin’ in windex
Is this song about Eminem? If so, why do Em and Mariah keep going back and forward?
WE’RE OPEN

Not much surprises me anymore. Trust me, I’ve heard a lot. I guess that’s why I wasn’t totally surprised to read the latest quote from Sidney Hicks, comedienne Monique’s husband/manager. He apparently feels that it’s no big deal if he or his wife sees other people. Monique has said things in the past that indicated they might have an open marriage. I say to each his or her own.
But I do have a question. Given the traditional meaning of marriage, is an open marriage really a marriage at all?
IT’S OVER NOW

“They said it wouldn’t last.” *mimicking Michael Jackson* Unfortunately, it’s looking like they were right. There are Atlanta divorce papers confirming that singer Usher filed for divorce from wife, Tameka Foster-Raymond. They have two sons together. They’ve been married for two years, although reports say they’ve been separated for about a year. It’s never a good thing when a marriage ends, especially when there are children involved. Yet, I’m also an advocate of doing what’s best for all involved and if the relationship has become unworkable for both, they definitely have the right to peacefully part ways.
Some people feel Usher’s marriage affected his career. What type of affect do you think a divorce will have on his career?
WHEN HAVE WE GONE TOO FAR

Actress Gabrielle Union is reportedly planning to sue blog bossip.com after they posted an anonymous letter from the ex-wife of an NFL player. She was once married to NFL player Chris Howard. She’s apparently been linked to many athletes and she’s getting tired of seeing things that are not true. Unfortunately, it’s common for an entertainer to have anything posted about them on the Internet. Sometimes it’s true; sometimes it’s not. Usually, people can’t tell the difference. If this lawsuit really is going to take place, it’s going to be a tough sell. You can’t regulate the Internet.
When have we gone too far? Should there be a limit to what people can say about someone on the Internet?
DON’T WANNA HOLD MY BREATH

I don’t know too many bigger music fans than me. Yet, I’ve become a little wary of putting too much stock in one artist, even if I feel they are absolutely brilliant. Unfortunately, I have to say the same for singer Whitney Houston. Don’t get me wrong! I’m happy to hear that she’s scheduled to release her long-awaited album in September this year. I sincerely hope that her album is a major success. However, time has taught me not to expect one album release to stop the overflow of musical debris on the radio.
Are there any artists that you’re still waiting to see make a major comeback? What type of reception do you think Whitney will receive this time?
