It’s no mistake that rap sales are hitting the skids. There have been countless complaints about the music on the radio but there’s a good reason for it; I like to call it “The Cyclical Effect.” Usually, new, exciting and inventive music surfaces at the beginning of a decade. Think TLC and Kris Kross. From the beginning til mid decade, the music industry is always on a roll. Then, mid to late decade, the music starts to peter out. It’s like a machine that’s running out of steam. The music starts to seriously slow down in the second half. In 1997, we had Rome (I Belong To You), Changing Faces (G.H.E.T.T.O.U.T) and even Puff Daddy or Diddy was singing “I’ll Be Missing You.” If you listen closely, you can hear the same thing happening right now. Everybody wants to go against the grain (rap/hip-hop) and release slower, more conscious music. My prediction is that the music will continue to slow down and, in the next decade, we’ll see a new crop of fresh faces with interesting forms of expression. In the meantime, get ready for some laid back music, especially with the revitalization of Blue-Eyed Soul. But don’t get to use to these pale-faced crooners, some of them won’t be around for long.
